2 coasts ... 1 HOPE

On January 6th 2009, I will be flying out to LA and walking back to Boston, raising money for cancer research. The route I'm taking should take 5 months and cover roughly 3,800 miles. We will be filming the entire trip for an upcoming documentary.

Rancho Cu-cu-cachoo. I am the walker.

Well, I felt good when I woke up this morning and we got rolling right on time. We decided that I was going to walk without the SWITCHBACK HYBRID today and just carry a small backpack. I thought I had a good pace going, but when I got the first stats from my dad I was a little disappointed. 3.4 miles per hour is slower than I needed to go to hit the goal of 35 miles on the day.

I continued down historic Route 66 and had a view of Mt. Baldy all day long.

My mom called into one of the local radio stations. They mentioned the "walk" and played her request, "You're Gonna Miss This" by Trace Adkins. Soon after it aired, a truck drove by beeping and waving. That was the first person to beep at me without cursing and that felt good.

I walked through a couple of neat towns today:

San Dimas of "Bill & Ted's" fame. EXCELLENT !

Then there was, Rancho Cucamonga. Besides the cool name, our "aunt-in -law", Alison, lives there and she came out to meet us with her daughter, Leah. We spent a few minutes catching up and talking "shop". They brought me a California baseball cap and a Rancho t-shirt. It was really nice to see them and thanks for the stuff guys.

Alison also warned of us something called the Santa Ana winds. These are no joke people. The gust were up to 40 mph with a steady blowing of 10-25. I thought I was gonna blow over a couple times. Not very easy to walk in at all.

I didn't get the 35 miles in, but I did get a blister and shin-splints. So I guess it evened out. NO! Any way we ended the day around the same time as always and headed in. Tomorrows a new day.

Before I forget let me thank a few individuals for helping my get to where I am. Roberta, Nancy, Ted, and Uncle Frank.

Day 3 total: 22.6
Jesse Walks America total: 63.9ish (-26.1 for my projection) Chalk it up to learning my limits on the job I guess.

rt 66, so historic. cant even imagine all the cool stuff your going to see, way more than if you were even driving. walking just brings it down to a whole other level. take care of those feet.

Drove on Route 66 with Becky back in those trucking days. It's neat, and yet somehow sad.
amelia sends kisses and big love to Uncle Jesse & Uncle Carl. And don't worry Uncle Jim is in the cellar.
